By All Means

My wife and I just welcomed our first child into the world. This experience has opened my eyes to the wonder of motherhood and the extent to which childbirth should be seen as one of the ultimate sacrifices. This poem was written after four long days of contractions and is dedicated to the strongest woman I know. Thank you for being an exceptional role model to our daughter

If you ever have a doubt
(about your Mother’s love)
I’ll tell you stories of a birth
that called you from above

Of how she often dreamed of you,
and sought you in the stars,
or how she longed courageously
while in a line of cars.

And waited, of dear little one,
with patience and with pain,
through beauty of a cloudless sky
and summer bouts of rain.

Of how she paid for you,
(with needles and with fear)
and carried on with diligence
to see you coming near.

Surrender was her greatest gift
(and trust in those around)
As she waited anxiously,
to hear that joyous sound.

Now bouyed by your innocence,
and warmed by your embrace,
We hope to spend our lives with you
at this or any pace.
